How to Spot Fake News and Deepfakes in the Age of AI

A video of a politician saying something outrageous. A news article from a site that looks exactly like BBC. A voice message from your "boss" asking for an urgent transfer. All fake. All convincing. All created in minutes using AI tools that anyone can access.

The technology for creating fake content has outpaced most people's ability to detect it. Here's how to catch up.

Understanding the Threat

Deepfakes are AI-generated or AI-manipulated media — video, audio, or images — designed to look authentic. The technology has improved dramatically. Early deepfakes had obvious glitches: weird eye movements, blurry edges, audio that didn't quite sync. Modern deepfakes can fool trained journalists.

Fake news operates differently. It's not always fabricated from scratch — often it's real information taken out of context, mixed with false claims, or presented with a misleading framing. The goal isn't always to lie. It's to make you react before you think.

How to Verify What You See

Check the source. Not just the name of the publication, but the actual URL. Fake news sites often mimic legitimate outlets with slightly different domains — bbcnews.co instead of bbc.co.uk, for example.

Look for the story elsewhere. If a major event happened, multiple credible outlets will cover it. If you can only find a story on one site or from one social media account, be skeptical.

Check the date. Old stories get recirculated as if they're new, especially when they can be tied to current events. A real event from 2019 presented as "breaking news" in 2026 is manipulation, even if the underlying story was true.

Reverse image search. If a story includes a shocking photo, drag it into Google Images or TinEye. You'll often find the original image is from a completely different context.

How to Spot Deepfakes

Look at the edges. Hair, ears, and the boundary between face and background are still the hardest parts for AI to get right. Zoom in. Look for blurring, warping, or inconsistencies.

Watch the eyes. In many deepfakes, blinking patterns are unnatural — either too regular or absent entirely. Eye reflections may also be inconsistent between the left and right eye.

Listen to the audio. AI-generated voice still struggles with natural breathing patterns, micro-pauses, and the way people emphasize words differently based on emotion. If speech sounds oddly smooth or flat, it might be synthetic.

Check the context. Ask yourself: why would this person say this? Is it consistent with their known positions? Does the setting make sense? Sometimes the most effective detector isn't technology — it's critical thinking.

Tools That Can Help

Several platforms now offer deepfake detection: Microsoft's Video Authenticator, Sensity AI, and various browser extensions that flag manipulated media. These aren't perfect, but they add a useful layer of verification.

For text-based misinformation, fact-checking sites like Snopes, PolitiFact, and AFP Fact Check maintain databases of debunked claims. Before sharing something that triggers a strong emotional reaction, spend 30 seconds checking.

The Bigger Picture

The goal of most misinformation isn't to make you believe a specific lie. It's to make you distrust everything — to create so much noise that you can't distinguish signal from garbage. The antidote isn't paranoia. It's a habit of pausing, checking, and thinking before reacting.

You don't need to become a forensic analyst. You just need to be slower than the algorithm wants you to be.
